About Pope Francis: Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and became Pope Francis after St. Francis of Assisi when he became the 266th pontiff on March 13, 2013. He is the first Latin American and the first non-European leader in 1,200 years. He was born in Buenos Aires in 1936, he became ordained in the Catholic Church as a priest in 1969. He later became a bishop in 1992, he was then the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. Before he became Pope he was appointed as a cardinal in 2001.
